Canon notes: Mid-episode five, after she first leaves home, before meeting Bruce.
Species: Human/Vampire
Age: Was alive for 14 years, undead for seven.
Arrival Condition: Perfectly fine, just dead. Her vampirism means she can't go out in the sun, and has a unique diet that can be managed without outright killing humans, if she must.
History: Wiki here. There are key differences, but some background information may be supplemented by the character's history in the novel.
Personality: For a dead girl, Claudia has an incredible enthusiasm for life. The world is so spectacular, in both its joys and horrors, and always seems to have more to offer. Profoundly curious and without any sound reason to be shy, Claudia will keep asking until she gets an answer, and then she will write everything she knows down to make sure she understood the whole shape of it. Above all, Claudia must understand how her body fits alongside it.
Going from a cruel, bleak box of a life under her aunt's thumb, to the sumptuous, electric power of a wealthy vampire felt like freedom, at first. It took some time for Claudia to realize just how small her life really was, the cage merely gilded, when it felt as though she had been given the ability to do anything she wanted, too strong to be stopped. That is an ongoing reckoning; for now, she can devour whatever will fill her, either her stomach or her mind, and any questions of her ability can be introduced to the incinerator. Maybe a Black girl shouldn't be in a white man's library, but no one else was going to tell her how a caterpillar became a butterfly, and a security guard makes a fine appetizer.
After all, what Claudia wants can't be wrong. She trusts her body implicitly, guided by her impulses and without regrets for what has to be shed in the act. If she is hungry, she will eat; a body and its guts staining the floor is a fair price. She does not lack patience, though, and she is clever and will plan for long term gain. If she wants she will pursue it doggedly, and no warning for the consequences is an effective deterrent. Louis says 'listen to your elders', but that is unjust; the wisdom of elders was earned through their bodies, and Claudia deserved to feel everything the world had to offer.
Louis is just trying to protect her, though, and Claudia does know that. Her hunger may drag her away from him, but in the end her heart will always bring her back. She adores him, is learning that she should be protecting him as well, because there is no one else in the world for her. Maybe there is more than one body worth listening to. Maybe, eventually, there could be more than that.
Above all, what defines Claudia is compulsion. She skips when she is happy, and every morning before bed must whisper her farewell into the pages of a book. She is driven to find connection, and when it doesn't manifest, takes parts of those who suffered for it to keep instead. When her whole body is in pain, she still holds it in the fire, screaming her throat raw until she can't make any more sound.
Abilities: Increased speed, strength and senses. Can read minds and communicate telepathically, and block the same from other telepaths. Incredibly durable with a kind if accelerated healing, where her body will always try to maintain the state in which she was first turned--even her hair will reset rapidly from a trim, though it won't otherwise grow. Claudia is formidable for a human, but a young and comparably weak vampire whose unique talents are tied to her limitations. Stuck in perpetual puberty as a vampire leads to an increased bloodlust from a heightened metabolism, and dangerous hormonal bursts that can lead to a shriek powerful enough to break glass.
